Eye shapes, tilt

Downturned eyes: how to tell, and makeup that lifts

Downturned eyes have outer corners that sit slightly lower than the inner corners, so a line from corner to corner slopes gently down toward the temples. It is a less common tilt, because most adult eyes tilt slightly up, and it gives a soft, gentle, often kind expression. Makeup for downturned eyes is about lifting the outer third: angle every line up and out, never straight out or down.

How to tell if you have downturned eyes

Look straight into a mirror in daylight, with your face relaxed and your chin level, and check these:

  • Hold a pen level across your inner corners: your outer corners sit below it.
  • The upper lid slopes downward over the outer third of the eye.
  • Liner drawn straight out from your lash line points down toward your cheek.
  • People sometimes ask if you are tired or sad when you feel neither.
On a downturned eye, the line from the inner to the outer corner slopes down toward the temple instead of climbing.

How downturned eyes vary

Some eyes are downturned by bone and lid structure from the start. Others turn down over time: the outer brow and the outer part of the upper lid tend to drop with age, and a fold of skin at the outer corner can make an eye read downturned even when the corners themselves sit level.

The tilt you measure depends on head position. Tipping your chin up makes your eyes look more downturned in photos, and tipping it down lifts them (Vaca et al., 2021). Check with your chin level.

A downturned look can come mostly from the lid, not the corners. If the outer third of your upper lid slopes down but your corners sit level, the advice here still helps.

Downturned vs hooded vs upturned eyes

Downturned vs hooded

Hooding over the outer corner can make a level eye look downturned. Lift the fold gently with a fingertip: if the corners line up once it is out of the way, the slope came from the hood, not the tilt.

Downturned vs upturned

The two are opposite ends of the same measurement. On upturned eyes the outer corner climbs above the inner one; on downturned eyes it sits below.

Makeup for downturned eyes

Eyeliner

Stop the line from following your lash line down. Draw along the upper lashes until about two thirds of the way across, then angle the line up toward the tail of your brow, so the outer end finishes higher than the corner. Keep the lower liner light or leave it off at the outer corner, where it would weigh the eye down.

Eyeshadow

Blend the deepest shade in an upward diagonal at the outer corner, aimed at the end of the brow, and keep the outer lower lash line clean. A light, bright shade under the outer brow lifts the area further.

Mascara and lashes

Concentrate curl and length on the outer third, or add a flared half lash there. Lashes that point up at the outer corner do as much lifting as liner.

What to skip

  • A line that follows your lash line all the way to the corner: it extends the downward slope.
  • Dark shadow or liner under the outer lower lashes: it pulls the corner down.

An everyday look, step by step

  1. Blend a matte shade up and out from the outer corner toward the brow tail.
  2. Line the upper lashes, then lift the line upward from two thirds across.
  3. Skip lower liner at the outer corner, or keep it to a soft smudge under the center.
  4. Curl lashes firmly and add extra mascara to the outer third.
  5. Highlight just under the tail of the brow.

Brows and glasses for downturned eyes

Brows

Lift the tail of the brow: fill the end slightly upward rather than letting it droop past the outer corner of the eye. A brow tail that ends higher than its start makes a downturned eye look lifted.

Glasses

Cat-eye and upswept frames lift the outer corner. Avoid frames whose outer edge drops lower than the inner, like some aviators, which repeat the downward slope.

Common combinations

Each eye shape describes one part of the eye, so most downturned eyes come with other traits too. These pairings come up most often:

  • DownturnedHooded

Hooded and downturned together are common, especially with age. Map liner with your eyes open and angle everything up.

  • DownturnedRound

Round, downturned eyes read soft and open. Keep the lift at the outer corner and the shimmer in the center.

  • DownturnedDeep-set

Deep-set eyes that turn down benefit from light shadow on the lid and a lifted brow tail.

Check your eye shape from a photo

The detector levels your face on its midline and measures the angle from each inner corner to its outer corner. Below 0 degrees, where the outer corner sits lower than the inner one, reads downturned (class III in the classification of Lee, Choung, and Choung, 2020). It shows the angle for each eye, because one eye often turns down more than the other.

Frequently asked questions

What is a negative canthal tilt?

It means the outer corner of the eye sits lower than the inner corner, so the line between them slopes down. Downturned eyes have a negative tilt; most adult eyes have a small positive one.

Do downturned eyes make you look tired?

They can read as softer or sleepier in photos, especially with outer hooding. Lifting the liner and shadow at the outer corner, curling lashes, and a lifted brow tail change that quickly.

Can downturned eyes be fixed?

Makeup can lift the look. Surgery that moves the outer corner (canthoplasty) exists, but it carries real risks, including a misshapen corner, the corner slipping back, and a lower lid that turns outward (Kim et al., 2016), and it is not something a healthy eye needs.

Why do my eyes look more downturned with age?

The outer brow and upper lid tend to drop over time, and a fold of skin can settle over the outer corner. That changes how the eye reads even when the corners themselves stay put.
