We measure your forehead, cheekbones, jaw, and face length, then match the proportions to one of six shapes.

The 6 face shapes

Each shape has its own guide with haircuts, glasses, and makeup that suit it. See all six face shapes side by side.

Oval face shape

Your face is a little longer than it is wide, with a forehead slightly wider than a softly rounded jaw.

Round face shape

Your face is about as wide as it is long, with full cheeks and a soft, rounded jawline.

Square face shape

Your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw are similar widths, with a strong, angular jawline.

Heart face shape

Your forehead is the widest part of your face, tapering to a narrower jaw and a more pointed chin.

Diamond face shape

Your cheekbones are the widest point, with a narrower forehead and jaw and a defined chin.

Oblong face shape

Your face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with fairly even widths and a long cheek line.

How to measure your face shape by hand

  1. Forehead: measure across the widest part, usually halfway between your brows and hairline.
  2. Cheekbones: measure across the highest point of each cheekbone, just below the outer corner of the eyes.
  3. Jawline: measure from the tip of the chin to the corner of the jaw below the ear, then double it.
  4. Face length: measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.

Then compare. If length is clearly the biggest number, you are likely oblong or oval. If the widths are similar and the jaw is angular, you are likely square. A wider forehead points to heart, and wide cheekbones with a narrow forehead and jaw point to diamond.

How the face shape detector works

A face model runs inside your browser and maps the outline of your face. It measures the width of your forehead, cheekbones, and jaw, your face length, and the angle at the corner of your jaw. Then it compares those proportions with the six classic shapes. Nothing is uploaded, and every line it measured is drawn on your photo.

The same face model powers two more free tools: the golden ratio face calculator, which compares your proportions with 1.618, and the face symmetry test. Face shape is about structure, not skin. The GoodSkin app scores 14 skin traits from one selfie, from puffiness to firmness. Read more about AI face analysis.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my face shape?

Compare three widths (forehead, cheekbones, jaw) with the length of your face, then look at your jawline. The detector measures this from your photo. To do it by hand, measure in a mirror with a soft tape and use the quiz.

What is the most common face shape?

Oval is usually described as the most common, but most people are a blend of two shapes. If your result is borderline, read both descriptions.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face model runs in your browser. It downloads once, then your photo is analyzed on your device and never sent anywhere.

Why did I get a different shape from another tool?

Face shape is not an exact science. Camera angle, lens distortion, hair covering the forehead, and head tilt all change the measurements. Use a straight-on photo with your hair back for the best result.
