Round face shape: haircuts, glasses, and more

A round face shape is about as long as it is wide, with full cheeks as the widest point and a soft jaw that curves into the chin without corners. What suits it best is anything that adds height, length, or a few angles: long layers, side parts, volume on top, and rectangular or cat-eye frames. To check, our free face shape detector reads your length-to-width ratio from one photo.

How to tell if you have a round face

Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror in even light, and check these:

  • With your hair tied back, your face looks almost as wide as it is long.
  • Your cheeks are the fullest, widest part of your face, and the outline has no straight edges.
  • Feeling from just below your ear down to your chin, you find a gentle curve with no corner.
  • Your chin is short and rounded rather than pointed or broad and flat.
  • In a straight-on photo, a circle drawn around your face touches your hairline, both cheeks, and your chin with little gap.
Forehead
Fairly wide, curving into the temples, often with a rounded hairline.
Cheekbones
The widest part, with full cheeks carrying the width outward.
Jaw
Wide but soft, blending into the cheeks without a visible corner.
Chin
Short and rounded, sitting close under the mouth.
Length
Close to the cheekbone width, so the face looks almost as wide as it is long.

Round or square or oval?

Round vs square

Both are about as wide as they are long, so the jaw decides it. A square face has a defined corner below each ear and a broad, flat-bottomed chin. A round face curves through that same spot, and in photos its jawline fades softly into the neck instead of casting a sharp shadow at the corner.

Round vs oval

An oval face has a similar soft outline but is clearly longer than it is wide, and it narrows more toward the chin. If your length and cheekbone width look almost equal, you are closer to round.

Hairstyles for a round face

  1. Long layers that start below the chin

Keeping the first layer under the jaw leaves the cheeks uncovered and creates long vertical lines, which make the face read longer. It suits straight and wavy hair alike.

  2. Asymmetrical lob with a deep side part

A long bob that ends 2-3 inches below the chin, slightly longer on one side, stops past your widest point and draws a diagonal across the face. The off-center part adds an angle a round face does not have on its own.

  3. Textured quiff or pixie with height on top

Volume on top adds length, and tighter sides keep the width down. This is the easiest short cut for a round face, whatever your gender.

  4. Tapered curly cut or high puff

Shaping curls or coils so they are taller than they are wide moves the volume above the cheeks rather than beside them. Ask for shorter sides and more length at the crown, or gather coils into a high puff.

  5. Long braids or locs with a side part

Braids or locs hanging past the shoulders form strong vertical lines on both sides of the face, which reads as length.

  6. High ponytail or top knot with loose strands at the jaw

Pulling the hair up adds height, and two thin pieces left out to fall past the jaw trace long lines down the sides of your face.

Bangs

Long side-swept bangs, or curtain bangs that begin at brow level and angle down past the cheekbones, work best because they form diagonal and vertical lines. Keep them light rather than thick. If you want a straight fringe, ask for a piecey, slightly separated one so some forehead shows through and the face keeps its height.

What to skip

  • A chin-length rounded bob with volume at the sides: it ends right at your widest point and repeats the circle.
  • Heavy, blunt bangs straight across the brows: they hide forehead height and make the face look wider than it is long.
  • Small round glasses: they echo your curves and look tiny next to full cheeks.

Glasses for a round face

  • Rectangular frames, wider than they are deep. Straight lines and defined corners give a round face the structure it lacks, and a frame that is wider than it is tall makes the face look a little longer and slimmer.
  • Upswept cat-eye frames. The lifted outer corners pull the eye upward and outward, giving the upper face a sharper angle.
  • Wayfarer-style square frames. The heavier top line anchors attention high on the face, and the shape, wider at the top than the bottom, adds corners where you have none.

Makeup, brows, and beards

Contour and blush

Contour in a diagonal line from just in front of the ear toward the corner of the mouth, stopping at the middle of the cheek, and add a soft touch at the temples. Place blush slightly above and behind the apples and sweep it up toward the temples rather than in circles. Highlight a vertical line down the center: forehead, bridge of the nose, and chin.

Brows

A higher, more defined arch gives a round face the angles it lacks and pulls the eye upward. Keep the tail lifted and a touch longer, and skip very rounded brows, which repeat the circle.

Beards and facial hair

Keep the sides short and let the chin grow longer: a goatee, a short boxed beard with tight cheek lines, or a beard that is longest at the chin all add length and edge. Bushy sides make the face wider.

How the detector reads it

The main signal is a short face: a length under about 1.24 times your cheekbone width. (The detector measures from the highest forehead landmark to the chin and adds 8% to reach a hairline it cannot see.) The further below 1.24 you go, the stronger the round score. Soft jaw corners, an angle wider than 160 degrees where the side of the face meets the jawline, add a little more. A short face also scores a smaller amount toward square, so if your jaw is also wide (82% or more of your cheekbone width) or turns a sharp corner (under 148 degrees), the result can switch to square or read "Round, with some square traits".

Frequently asked questions

Can you have short hair with a round face?

Yes. Choose short cuts with height on top and closer sides, like a pixie with a longer crown or a textured quiff. Skip short cuts that are fullest at cheek level, such as a rounded bowl shape.

Will losing weight change a round face shape?

Your face shape comes mostly from bone structure (cheekbones, jaw, and chin), and weight does not change that. Facial fat and fluid do change how full your cheeks look, so your face can read rounder on some days, for example with morning puffiness, but your basic proportions stay the same.

Is a round face the same as having chubby cheeks?

No. Round describes proportions: a face about as long as it is wide, with a soft jaw. A lean face can be round, and full cheeks can appear on any face shape.

How can I make a round face look longer in photos?

Hold the camera slightly above eye level and push your chin a little forward and down, which sharpens the jawline. Part your hair off-center and let it fall straight down in front of or behind your shoulders, so it forms vertical lines.
