Light brown eyes: honey shades, and light brown vs hazel

Light brown eyes have a moderate amount of melanin, the same pigment that darkens skin in the sun, in the front layer of the iris: enough to look brown, not so much that the iris looks dark. In daylight they read as honey, caramel, tan, or chestnut, often a little darker around the pupil. They are often mistaken for hazel or amber, and the quickest way to tell is to look for green: light brown eyes have none.

How common are light brown eyes, next to dark brown?

Most eye color studies lump every shade of brown together. One large study in the Netherlands split them, and among its thousands of Dutch participants, light brown far outnumbered dark brown:

Light eyes are common in the Netherlands, so this split describes that country, not the world; we found no comparable count for regions where almost everyone has brown eyes. For brown as a whole, our brown eyes guide has the worldwide figures.

Why light brown eyes look darker indoors

Light brown eyes have enough melanin to absorb a fair share of light, so how bright the room is matters. In sun they glow honey or gold; under ordinary indoor light they can pass for medium brown.

So judge light brown eyes outdoors or by a bright window. If you only ever see them indoors, you may have been calling them plain brown.

Light brown vs hazel eyes: check the outer half

Light brown and hazel can look identical across a room. Up close, in sunlight, compare a spot near the pupil with a spot near the rim: one eye stays brown, the other changes color partway.

Seen the green outdoors but not indoors? That is hazel. The full step-by-step check is in our guide to how to tell if you have hazel eyes.

Makeup and colors for light brown eyes

Eyeshadow

Greens and teals sit opposite the orange in light brown, so they bring out its gold: try teal, olive, or emerald. Plum and violet do the same more softly, and bronze or gold match the iris for a warm, easy look.

Eyeliner

Deep green, teal, or plum liner makes light brown look lighter and warmer. Dark brown liner frames it without changing the color.

Lashes and brows

Black mascara adds contrast to a light iris. Brows in a warm medium brown keep the face balanced.

Clothes near your face

Teal, olive, and cobalt make light brown eyes look more golden. Warm coral and cream flatter the honey tones; camel and caramel match them.

Color seasons for light brown eyes

Light brown with warm, golden tones points to the warmer, lighter seasons: True Spring for golden brown eyes with warm hair, Light Spring when hair and skin are light too, and Soft Autumn when the whole look is muted.

Frequently asked questions

Can light brown eyes turn green?

No. They can look more golden next to green clothing, but light brown eyes do not have the low-pigment outer zone that lets hazel eyes look green.

Are light brown eyes recessive?

Shades of brown are not passed on by a simple dominant and recessive rule; several genes are involved, as the inheritance section of our brown eyes guide describes.

Why do my light brown eyes look yellow in some photos?

Warm sunlight and a camera that warms the picture both push the gold in a light brown iris forward. In golden-hour light, light brown can read almost amber for a moment.
