Skin tone guide, Fitzpatrick I to II
Fair skin: best colors, makeup, hair, and sun care
Fair skin is light skin that burns easily and tans only a little, one step deeper than porcelain. It usually has a visible pink, peach, or neutral cast, sometimes an olive one, and it often comes with freckles. Fair skin roughly matches Fitzpatrick types I and II, so its best colors, makeup, and sun habits all start from the same place: work with its lightness, not against it.

What is fair skin?
Fair skin is light but not translucent. By a window it reads as ivory, light beige, or pale peach, and it turns pink before it turns brown. A summer outdoors may add a light tan or a new crop of freckles that fades again by winter.
It is one of the most common words on foundation labels, and it spans many backgrounds: Northern, Western, and Eastern European, some East Asian and Middle Eastern families, and many people of mixed heritage. Hair can be anything from red or blonde to black, and your hair color changes how much contrast your outfits can carry.

Fair or light skin?
Fair skin is lighter and burns more easily; it looks ivory or pale peach and stays pale most of the year. Light skin is a step deeper, looks beige, and usually tans after a burn. If the lightest shades in most foundation lines are close to right for you, you are fair.
Fair skin undertones
Depth is only half of your skin tone. Underneath it, fair skin can lean cool, neutral, warm, or olive, and that undertone decides which colors, foundations, and metals look most natural. Here is how each one looks at this depth.
- Cool undertone
Rosy fair
Pink or red in the cheeks, flushes easily, and burns rather than tans. Silver and blue-based pinks look natural.
- Neutral undertone
Neutral fair
A balanced light beige. You can borrow from warm and cool palettes, and N-labeled foundation is the easiest match.
- Warm undertone
Peach fair
A peach or golden glow, often with freckles and red, strawberry, or golden hair. Gold jewelry and coral lips suit you.
- Olive undertone
Fair olive
Light with a muted green-yellow cast that can look slightly gray in winter. Pink foundations often look ashy on you.

Best colors for fair skin
Choose your undertone to see the clothing colors that tend to flatter fair skin. Each swatch shows your skin above a neckline of the color, the way it sits when you wear it.
Rosy fair, pink, red, or blue castBlue-based color with medium depth: rose, berry, cornflower, and navy. Emerald is the green that suits cool fair skin best.
Neutral fair, neither pink nor goldenSoftened mid-tones like dusty rose, jade, and denim. Soft white flatters more than bright white.
Peach fair, golden, peach, or yellow castCoral, peach, warm teal, and moss. Cream and camel make better neutrals for you than black or gray.
Fair olive, muted green-gray castEarthy color with some depth: terracotta, sage, deep teal, and plum bring out the warmth in olive skin without making it look sallow.
Colors that wash fair skin out, and what to wear instead
Instead of
pale beige, wear dusty roseA top the color of your skin washes out the space around your face. Dusty rose is just as soft and gives you color back.
Instead of
bright orange, wear coralPure orange competes with the pink in fair skin. Coral is its softer, pinker relative and suits far more fair coloring.
Instead of
mid gray, wear navyA flat mid gray drains the warmth from fair skin. Navy is just as easy to wear and keeps your face looking awake.

Foundation
Start with fair or light shades and pick the family by undertone: C or rose shades for rosy fair skin, W or golden shades for peach fair skin, N for neutral, and O for fair olive. Swatch three shades side by side on your jaw, not your hand, and look again after 10 minutes, since many formulas darken a little as they dry. If you have freckles, a sheer to medium formula matches better than a heavy one because it lets them show.
Foundation by undertone
- Cool
- Neutral
- Warm
- Olive
Most brands mark undertone with a letter after the shade number: C for cool, N for neutral, W for warm, and O for olive where they offer it.
Blush
- Rose
- Peach
- Soft coral
Rose for cool fair skin, peach or soft coral for warm. Apply to the apples of the cheeks and blend up, a little at a time.
Bronzer
- Light neutral
- Soft golden
A light neutral or soft golden bronzer, swept where the sun would hit. If it looks orange on your jaw, it is too warm.
Lipstick
- Pink nude
- Rosewood
- Coral
- Classic red
Pink nudes and rosewood for every day, coral for warm fair skin, and a classic blue-based red for cool fair skin.
Best hair colors for fair skin
- Strawberry blondeEchoes the peach in warm fair skin and looks lovely with freckles.
- CopperA rich copper or auburn is one of the most striking colors on warm fair skin.
- Ash blondeRosy fair skin looks clear and calm with a soft ash or beige blonde.
- Mushroom brownA cool, smoky light brown for cool or neutral fair skin that wants a darker shade.
Hair colors to skip
- Blue-black: more contrast than most fair skin carries, and regrowth shows quickly.
- Yellow gold blonde: a strong yellow tone can make rosy fair skin look redder.
Whatever you choose, test it first: the NHS advises testing hair dye at least 48 hours before you use it.
Gold or silver for fair skin?
Fair skin carries fine to medium pieces well. Silver and white gold make rosy fair skin look brighter, yellow gold suits peach fair skin, and rose gold flatters neutral fair skin. Freshwater pearls and soft stones like aquamarine and rose quartz suit almost any fair coloring.
Sun care for fair skin
Usual Fitzpatrick type
I to II
Burns easily, tans poorly
Whatever your depth, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapplied about every two hours outdoors. For fair skin, add these:
- Use enough. The AAD says most adults need about a shot glass of sunscreen to cover the body, and a thin layer gives less protection than the label promises.
- Wear it on cloudy days too. UV still reaches your skin through cloud, and fair skin needs very little of it to burn.
- If you want a tan, a self-tanning product gives color without UV. Keep the sunscreen on with it.
Common skin concerns for fair skin
Every skin tone can have any skin concern, but some show up more often, or more visibly, at each depth. These are the ones worth knowing for fair skin.
Burning
Fair skin burns easily and tans poorly, which is how DermNet's phototype guide describes Fitzpatrick types I and II. Every burn adds up, and the NHS notes that getting sunburnt can increase your risk of skin cancer.
Redness and rosacea
Fair skin shows redness readily, and fair skin with light hair and eyes is a known risk factor for rosacea. Gentle, fragrance-free products and sun protection help, and our guide to reducing redness on your face covers the rest.
Freckles and sun spots
Sun brings out freckles quickly on fair skin, and years of it can leave flat brown sun spots. Daily sunscreen stops new ones from forming, and our guide to dark spots on the face covers what fades the ones you have.
See a board-certified dermatologist about any spot, rash, or color change that is new, growing, or worrying you.
Color seasons for fair skin
Fair skin shows up most in the spring and summer families. Rosy fair skin often lands in Light Summer or True Summer, and peach fair skin with clear eyes in Light Spring or Bright Spring.

Frequently asked questions
What makeup is best for fair skin?
A foundation that matches your undertone (C, N, W, or O), a light hand with rose or peach blush, a light neutral bronzer, and lips anywhere from pink nude to classic red. Test everything on your jaw in daylight.
Does fair skin look good in black?
It depends on your hair. Fair skin with dark hair and eyes carries black well. With light hair, black near the face can look harsh, so try navy instead and keep black for trousers and shoes.
What hair color is best for fair skin?
Strawberry blonde and copper suit warm fair skin; ash blonde and mushroom brown suit cool fair skin. Very dark or blue-black dye usually adds more contrast than fair skin needs.
Is fair skin the same as white skin?
No. Fair describes depth, and people of many ethnicities have fair skin, including some East Asian, Middle Eastern, and mixed-heritage people. It is a color description, not an ethnic one.
